Captain's Corner
Pink Leow

I’Anson Trohpy wrap up

The Weather Gods were good to us last Sunday with 108 players in the field. Many thanks to the 20 members who represented the club and congratulations to both Mark Dodd and Diane Hughes as our top Stableford scorers, winning big meat packs.

This tournament has been held annually in Omokoroa since 1981 and Swampy kindly gave all players the history of the tournament. The Tauranga team won the trophy after a long drought since 2003; Omokoroa team came 2nd and the Mount came 3rd.

Thanks to all the helpers for the day which made it a very successful day.

WHS Handicap Playing table

The new WHS Handicap Playing Table is now available on the Notice Board by the Starter Office and outside the Ladies and Men’s room. You would have noticed your new playing handicap after some minor changes to our course rating.

We have also received from NZ Golf the suggested Stroke Index Value for each Hole based on the course rating. This will be reviewed with the Group Captains/convenors in August. We will need to play the new 8th hole for a period of time before any Index changes are made.

Dancing shoes (23rd July)

For those who have already booked and paid for your dinner with Jarrod on 23rd July, Two’s company and friends have been practicing and are ready to entertain us on the night. So, time to look for your dancing shoes and practice your best moves!

Annan Law Saturday Men’s Club Day

This week the finals of the Handicap Matchplay are on with Ian Wade playing Ash Pennell in the Omokoroa Cup and Jonathan Lewis up against Alan Thomson in the Presidents Trophy. Well done to you all and may the best players win! All four go through into the Grand Slam Cup at the end of the year.

Also we play the Senior/ Junior Event over the next two weeks. The playing handicap cut off is 16 and under for Seniors and 17 and over for juniors. We would like you to play with your partners where possible and will try and match players without partners with someone when you register at the starters office. The event will be won by the pair with the best combined aggregate stableford scores for the two rounds.

There will be a lucky member draw of $250 for a player for someone at prize giving this Saturday.

Club Strokeplay Championships

This 72 hole Event takes place from the 31st July and continues over 4 Saturdays. Due to a serious decline in participation over the last two years when we played over consecutive weekends on Saturdays and Sundays, we have moved the playing dates to Saturdays only. There are four divisions with trophies to be won and a chance to get your name on the honours board.

A-One Kitchens and Interiors Shootout

In the last two weeks there has been some substantial movement of players trying to qualify for the end of year Shootout. Welcome to Hayden Nganeko who joined the pack chasing a spot last Saturday. Do check out the rankings as they stand and you may be surprised how you could climb up the rankings with one good score.

The Open

Like most of you I will be up to all hours watching the British Open from Thursday night. My pick to win is Mathew Fitzpatrick although I’ll be cheering the South Africans and Kiwis.

Canadian Foursomes Haggle.
A beautiful sunny day greeted us on Thursday morning for our Canadian

Foursomes haggle. A lot of fun was had, some partners proved their

worth by getting others out of trouble, and one partnership scored a two

on 6th hole.

Wining partnership: Rohanne Hancock and Shirley Johnstone, runners up

Dot Bowdler and Ali Howarth.

Another fine winters morning a drew a good turnout of 32 keen golfers angling to make it through to the Shoot-out Final.

Remember that the top 10 in each division are eligible.

Format for the Shootout - Round 3 was Nett.

Round 3 top scorers were:

Division 1

Tom Hansen 35

Ken Hartley 35

Ted Parker 37

Lynton Holmes 37

Division 2

Barry O’Brien 33

Horton Schofield 34

Ian Rayson 34

Trevor Smith 35

2’s

Jim Avis on N°11

Denis Mason on N°4

Many of you have noted a subtle shift in your handicaps.

One or two of you seem to have migrated down a Division???

Also Division 1 has shrunk in size.

Whether or not that is a good thing or a bad thing is a question yet to be answered.

It does become a little bit problematic from the competition point of view for those of you recording scores in both divisions? Some consultation will be required.

Rating Experts have rated the course a little bit harder than previously meaning that you have all been playing better than you expected with the scores you have been achieving to date.

Next week we play Round 3 of the Stableford Cup Competition. This should prove a good test of everyone’s new handicaps.
