The Links Bistro and Bar

There has been some confusion among members as to the relationship between the Links Bistro and Bar and our Club.

To be clear to all members this is the summary of the deal.

The Links Bistro and Bar is a business run for the benefit of the Omokoroa Golf Club.

Hospitality is a complicated business and requires experience and expertise to succeed. We have contracted Omok Bistro Limited, owned by Ryan Ladbrook to run the business on our behalf for a flat commission on sales.

All revenue across the bar and café is banked directly into the Club bank account.

The Club pay all outgoings for product and overheads out of the revenue collected.

All staff and staff management is contracted to Omok Bistro Limited. Omok Bistro Ltd is their employer.

Omok Bistro Ltd has key performance targets to meet regarding cost percentages for product and staff as a portion of Sales revenue.

Omok Bistro Ltd and the Club meet monthly to review performance and target achievements. Because we manage all the cashflows the Club has excellent insight into performance and target achievements.

Omokoroa Golf Club will benefit from the efficiency and success of the Links Bistro and Bar. The bottom line rests with our Club, so rest assured that every event and dollar spent in our clubhouse contributes to Club revenue and benefits members.

A Word Around The Greens

SOS Treatment for the Practice Putting Green

Those early birds amongst you may have seen me out on the practice putting green from 6:30am on Wednesday morning, giving it some much-needed attention.

We carried out what I’d call a bit of an SOS treatment. I started by verticutting the green in four different directions, almost creating an argyle pattern across the surface. This was followed by spiking to break through approximately two inches of thatch, before applying seed and fertiliser.

This work was essential as the practice green is currently our worst affected green when it comes to Poa grass and excessive thatch.

Allan explained that this green suffered badly last summer when much of the Poa struggled and died off in the heat. The problem is made worse by its very shallow root system, with much of the rooting taking place in the thatch layer rather than deeper into the soil.

The current thatch level is approximately 15%, compared with around 4% for a healthy green, so there is plenty of work ahead of us.

Unfortunately, the disruption you are seeing now is necessary if we want to give the green the best possible chance of getting through summer. My goal is to gradually reduce that thatch layer by layer. It isn't something we can fix overnight, and it will take time, patience and ongoing work.

At the same time, we are working towards replacing the Poa with browntop, the grass traditionally found on our greens. Increasing the amount of browntop should ultimately help us produce healthier, smoother, quicker and more consistent putting surfaces.

There may be a little short-term pain along the way, but it is all being done with the long-term health and quality of our greens in mind.

A Special Thank You to Roger Pace

We would like to extend a very special thank you to Roger Pace for the many years he has spent caring for the beautiful gardens around the 4th tee.

Roger’s time, effort and dedication have created a wonderful little feature on our course, enjoyed not only by our members and visitors but also by the beautiful butterflies that the gardens have attracted over the years.

Roger has now decided it is time to retire from his gardening duties. His efforts around the 4th tee will certainly be missed, but the contribution he has made to making our course a more beautiful place will be remembered and appreciated.

Thank you, Roger, for everything you have done. We hope you can now spend a little more time enjoying the course rather than tending to it!

Some great first round matches last week in the first round of the club matchplay championships, some matches even going to the extra holes! Well done all first round winners who have made it through to the quarter finals this weekend.

It was also a great day for Ross Milne who won the hidden hole jackpot after several weeks of not being struck, well done Ross for taking home $500. A good reminder if you are in the haggle that you never know when a couple of good holes in a round might pay off!

A reminder about the Volunteer Cup on Saturday 24 October - 3 Man Ambrose  - so good idea to figure out who you want in your team for that weekend. 

Also the shootout is closing in on its final few rounds with the last qualifying round on Saturday 17^th October. We currently have a 7 way tie for the last qualifying position, with another 7 golfers one shot behind!  You can check out the current standings here:
