General Managers Message
Allan Botha

Dear Members,

No golf for me this week… simply too cold, wet and far too busy!!

Despite the weather trying its best to slow us down, things around the club are gathering real momentum. The building is progressing well, and it’s fantastic to see all the finer details now falling into place—it really feels like everything is starting to come together.

One of the highlights this week was walking through the new facilities with our incoming caterer, Ryan Ladbrook. It was fascinating to watch him in action as he mapped out exactly where everything needs to go for the most efficient service. What made it even better was seeing him physically “act it out”—grabbing an imaginary glass, rinsing it, pouring a beer, and ringing it up. Over in the café/bistro area, he was behind the counter grabbing an imaginary pie, spinning around to pop it into a make-believe speed oven, and serving it up in one smooth motion.

Watching Ryan at work reminded me a lot of us golfers. You know those practice swings where we’re trying to get the feel just right before the real shot? That’s exactly what he was doing—rehearsing, refining, and working out the most efficient flow. And I must say, it makes complete sense when you see it in action. We’re in very good hands when it comes to delivering a top-class food and beverage experience.

As we edge closer to moving into our new clubhouse, it’s time once again to get excited—and this time it’s all about the entranceway lighting. Have you seen it? Absolutely spectacular. It really sets the tone for what’s going to be a very special facility.

On the competition front, the US Open Sweepstakes wrapped up with a great finish. Congratulations to Ross Capill’s team, “Roscoes All Stars,” who took out top spot with a cumulative score of -2, counting the best four out of six selections. It was a tight finish, with Pink (“The Sexy 6”)Ryan Kendal (“Grip It and Rip It”), and Ravi Shearman (“Ten Under”) all finishing on Even Par—just pipped at the post!

A big thank you to everyone who entered—we had 43 entries in total. Let’s aim to fill the field for the final Major of the year!

A quick reminder on Local Rules—please take the time to check the notice board. Even better, head to the website via the link provided to stay fully up to date. And better still, check out the video Here showing how easily you can access this information on your digital scorecard. Thanks to Pink for showing me that handy trick!

To close, I’d like to acknowledge a very special evening at the club—the Big Thank You celebration for our outstanding volunteers, KD and Colin. It was a fantastic turnout and a fitting tribute to two absolute giants of our club. Your contributions have been immense, and we are all incredibly grateful. Thank you, gents.

A Word Around The Greens
Nathan Kerr, Head Greenkeeper

After a nice dry start to the winter we have now had a 100mm of rain fall on the course in the last few days which had topped the water table up so the course is currently very wet.

The middle of the 5th fairway is very wet hence why the tee markers have been moved forward.

We have drain blasted all the drains along the 5th fairway and they are clear of any blockages.

We now have to install a drain line straight through the middle of the wet area as there is drainage on each side of the problem area but nothing collecting the water through the issue itself.

We will need to hire a digger and install the new drainage pipe but we have no chance of doing this job with how wet it is now after the 100mm of rain we just got as we would make a huge mess and the job would be not as successful in these conditions.

As soon as it is semi dry enough we will attack this job and get the 5th back to it’s original length.

What a treat to watch both handicap matchplay finals come down the 18th hole on Saturday afternoon, obviously both were hard fought matches and went to the wire.

In the Omokoroa Cup final Mark Higginson managed to get past Andrew Morgan 1 up on the 18th hole. Congratulations Mark, winning 6 consecutive matches to win the Handicap Matchplay Championship is a fantastic achievement.  Commiserations to Andrew as it is another runner up in handicap matchplay after also being runner up in last years Presidents Cup. I know who I will be betting on next year.

The Presidents Cup final was another epic match, being all square after 18 holes of back and forth between Nick Turner & Jim Dunseath. Heading down the first extra hole in near darkness Nick played a great chip shot to tap in range and win the Match one up on 19th. Congratulations to Nick, and well played Jim

Matchplay now takes a break until September when the Club Matchplay championships are scheduled to be held after the Strokeplay Championship.

This Saturday is the first round of the Carroll Cup. This is a net competition with the three best scores of 4 qualifying rounds counting over the competition.

Another fantastic result is our handicap matchplay team winning the plate in the Bay of Plenty Handicap Competition. Great to have a new pennant for the club after many years of near misses for our pennant teams.

In this weeks haggle it was great to have Vince Stanway takeaway the 2s jackpot hitting two 2s in his round, as well as cleaning everyone out in Division 3, congratulations also to Hayden Nganeko for taking out Division One and Matt Garrett for winning Division 2.

Matariki Saturday: It might be worthwhile to consider your playing partners for Saturday 11th July, as we are going to play a Shamble. This is where all 4 players tee off, you choose the best tee shot and then play out the hole with your own ball from the location of the best tee shot. You must use at least 4 tee shots from each member of your 4 ball over the course of the round. There will also be a team prize for the best total stableford score from each group. Your usual handicap will apply for the day although the round will not count towards your handicap index.
