By-law update — building the rulebook the right way
Some of you will know we've started a steady, methodical programme to put the club's by-laws on a clear and consistent footing. This is unglamorous work, but it matters: good by-laws make decisions fairer, expectations clearer, and the club easier to run for the volunteers who give their time.
I'm pleased to report we've completed and signed off our first by-law: "How to Draft a By-law."
It might sound a little circular to start with a by-law about by-laws, but it's deliberate, and it's the right place to begin. This first by-law sets out how every future by-law gets made: how it's drafted, how members are consulted, how changes are classified depending on how significant they are, and how everything is reviewed over time. In short, it's the foundation that keeps the whole process transparent and consistent, so no by-law ever just appears out of nowhere.
With that groundwork in place, we've now moved on to the next piece: drafting the by-law for the Golf Committee.
The aim here is simply to set out clearly what the Golf Committee does; bringing together our sections (Men's, Women's, Vets', Friday, Junior and the 9-Hole groups) to coordinate the golfing side of the club, keep an eye on how things are tracking, and make sure the different parts of the club are talking to one another. This isn't about adding red tape or shifting power around; it's about clarity. When everyone understands who does what and how decisions are made, the club runs more smoothly and members can have confidence in the process.
I'll keep you posted as this work progresses, and there'll be opportunities for members to have their say before anything is finalised; that's built into the process by design.
As always, my door's open. If you've got thoughts on any of the above — or anything else about the club — come and find me, or drop me a line.
See you out there.
