General Managers Message
Allan Botha

Dear Members,

I hope this message finds you well and enjoying your time at the club.

Car Park Upgrade – Starting Monday 18 May
We’re pleased to confirm that our car park upgrade project will commence next week, Monday 18 May.

Please refer to the attached parking map and entrance guide to help you navigate during this period.

We understand this will cause some inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your patience. The short-term disruption will lead to long-term benefits, including:

  • More available parking spaces
  • Improved traffic flow
  • A safer environment for all members and visitors

Thank you in advance for your cooperation while we complete this important improvement.

Course Etiquette Focus – Divot Repair
This week, we’re focusing on repairing or replacing divots.

Please take a moment to watch the video included below for guidance.

A reminder:

  • A repaired or replaced divot recovers in half the time compared to one left unrepaired.
  • As we move into the cooler months, turf growth slows significantly, meaning recovery takes even longer.

Your effort in repairing divots makes a real difference in maintaining the quality of our course for everyone.

Cart Management Update
Geo-fencing is working well with only minor adjustments needed, helping keep club carts away from sensitive greens and tee areas. The rope system continues to effectively remind private cart users to maintain safe distances. Thank you to all members for your cooperation—your efforts are helping protect the course.

NEW CLUB BANK ACCOUNT
We now bank with the ANZ. Please update your bank records:
OMOKOROA GOLF CLUB INCORPORATED

Course & Club Updates

  • Stroke index changes will take effect soon. Tee signs will be updated by removing indexes first, with scorecards to follow—please refer to the attached proposed changes.
  • Placing rules will change from one club length to 15 cm on fairway in play only. Remember: mark, lift, clean, and place. No placing in the rough.
  • Board member call for nominations: please submit nominations to the office. Forms are available in the office. The original call for nominations was sent out last week.

Volunteers Needed – Mangrove Removal
We’re calling for volunteers to assist John Herder with mangrove removal:

Monday 18 May
2:00 PM
Meet at the Greenkeeper Shed

Please note, this will be John’s final year leading this work. We encourage anyone interested to come along, learn from the “Mangrove Master,” and consider stepping up in future years.

Thank you all for your continued support and contribution to making Omokoroa Golf Club such a great place to play.

See you on the course.

A Word Around The Greens
Nathan Kerr, Head Greenkeeper

It is so good to have a stretch of settled, sunny dry weather and may it continue.

Now that the cooler temperatures are here and the grass growth has finally started slowing down after 6 months of extreme growth, me and the team are now able to spend more time on the untidy areas of the golf course such as trimming the creek edges, edging the cart paths and spraying areas with Glyphosate that reduce the amount of weed eating trimming work.

The fairways have been sprayed for weed control in the past week using 2 products.

One product is a pre emergent which is designed to go down into the profile and kill the seed bank of future germinating weeds and the other product is designed to kill existing weeds that are already developed and growing.

These products are used twice a year on the fairways in spring and autumn as the pre emergent product lasts up to 6 months in the profile controlling future weed germinations and the product that kills existing developed weeds works straight away but doesn’t have any future weed protection, hence why we spray the pre emergent to give that 6 month cover we need.

The greens are improving everyday and will continue too as we are prioritising verti cutting the leaf canopy with regular light sand dusting which creates a firmer, truer, faster greens surface.

We are also prioritising more rolling on the greens which dramatically improves the speed of the greens surface.

Enjoy the sun and a drier golf course to play on??

9 Hole Ladies
Yvonne Hoskins

With a field of 26 and because we are starting our Match Play Championships next week -  in today's perfect weather we had a practice Match Play round.  It seemed it was a mixed bag - some players came in pleased with their golf - others not so much.  There was also a nett haggle.  Winners on the day were Maggie Seavill with a 34 nett (well done Maggie), followed by Dianne Mahony and Bev Hansen with 35, and Astrid Martin and Jane Stichbury with 36.  All very reasonable nett scores - well done winners.

9 Hole Men
Fred Hartley

The Matchplay for the two divisions has now been reduced to four players for the Championship and Plate semi-finals, to be played out on Thursday 28th May. Play on Thursday 21st May brings up the second round of the Kiwis v Rest of the World- Stableford this time.

Ben Van den Borst

Congratulations to Michael Surry for taking out this years Captains Trophy by three shots from Mark Lawry in second on countback over third placed Steve Vaega. Well done Michael & Mark who have now qualified for the Grand Slam towards the end of the year as well.

It was awesome to have so many people around for the $250 lucky member draw, although the calls for a redraw when Vinnie took it out were loud! Congrats Vinnie, don't spend it all at once.

It was also the qualifying round for the Handicap Matchplay events, the Omokoroa Cup and Presidents Cup. With a great 77 entrants in qualifying it was a tight battle to get into the top 64 for the  first round of the Omokoroa Cup this week. Next week first round losers head into the Presidents cup and winners carry on for glory in the Omokoroa Cup. Those not playing in the matchplay can up the stakes in your own 4 balls for extra beverages the next two weeks.

Remember to please enter your scorecard for handicapping purposes, your handicap on the day of each match is the handicap that will be used to determine when and where you might receive or have to give away shots.

In the event of any tied match at the end of 18 holes, sudden death playoff will be played from the 1st hole only. Any shots which have to be given according to handicaps also continue during sudden death. Please advise the office straight away of the result of your match at the conclusion of your game.

As it is a matchplay event this week and next, the matchplay competition takes priority over any regular competition for the next two weeks so no haggles, we still have our special prizes for nearest the pins etc which is free entry for all saturday mens players this week and next.

Here is the link to the matchplay draw https://www.omokoroagolf.co.nz/matchplay-competition?competitionId=1282025

You can also follow the draw by going to events calendar in the Omokoroa golf website and under 16th May will be the Mens Omokoroa Cup Championship Handicap Matchplay this will always be under this date for you to check how the draw is going.

We will also post an updated draw in Newsletter each Friday.

With dotgolf being unreliable on Saturdays, please hand your card in to the bar or office in case any issues arise

All the best for your matches this week, the weather is looking like it should be a great weekend for golf
