Course Work Update
This week, the 10th fairway underwent a major transformation. We resowed it with couch stolon's harvested from healthy fairways on the 5th, 14th, and 18th holes. The process is fascinating:

  • First, the original grass was sprayed out with glyphosate.
  • Then, the soil was turned, large debris removed, and stolons harvested.
  • Volunteers spread the stolons across the fairway, rolled them in, and watered them.

Now, nature takes over! In about 6–8 weeks, we hope to reopen the 10th as a par 4. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made this possible.

P.S. If the greens are a little slower and bumpier than normal this week it is due to all the extra work carried out on the 10th Fairway.

Fence Installation on the 10th Tee

Allow to display images

Last week, some concerns were raised about the new fence near the 10th tee. Here’s the background:

  • The fence was funded by a member to improve golfers safety and reduce damage to houses on the 11th and 12th holes.
  • Another fence will soon be installed on the right-hand side of the 10th tee for additional protection.

Why is this important? Since 2023, 14 insurance claims totaling $12,172.10 have been made for ball-strike damage to homes on Links View Dr and Valbrina Dr. These fences will significantly reduce such incidents and improve safety for golfers and residents alike.

Health and safety risk mitigation is a key responsibility for any golf course, and these changes align with that principle.

Other Course Changes

  • Native Grass Planting: Left of the 10th green, native grasses are being planted to protect residents and add strategic challenge for longer hitters. More will be added to the right of the 10th green
  • 11th Hole: The removal of the left greenside bunker and reshaping of the area follows the Course Masterplan (pages 16–17) approved by members.

  • 12th Hole: The new tee box, in play for over a month, is also part of the approved masterplan (page 17).

These updates confirm that the club is operating in the best interests of members and the long-term vision for Omokoroa Golf Club.

Clubhouse Rebuild & Member Support

With Christmas approaching and the weather improving, we’re seeing more members rounds, visitors—both regulars and new faces. Our team is working hard to make everyone feel welcome:

  • Office: Sandra, Sherryl, Simone, Peter, and Milla
  • Bar: Matthew, Scott, Sharon, Rachel, Keith and Milla
  • Course: Nathan, Shane, Mike, and volunteers KD and Colin
  • Food Cart: Kelli and Brett

Despite limited facilities during the clubhouse rebuild, everyone is doing their utmost to provide great service. Thank you, members, for your patience and support during this transitional phase. Keep your eyes on the finish line—soon we’ll be back in a brand-new clubhouse with better offerings than ever before!

Weekly Member Drop-In Session

In an effort to ensure accurate information is shared and to keep communication open, I will be making myself available every Monday, starting Monday, 1 December, in the Marquee from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

Feel free to grab a coffee and join me to discuss any issues, concerns, or ideas you may have. If I don’t have an immediate answer for you, I will make sure to follow up as soon as possible.

Your feedback and questions are always welcome—let’s keep the conversation going!

Enjoy your golf, stay safe, and thank you for being part of Omokoroa Golf Club.

Men's World
Ben Van den Borst

Wow some hot scoring last week for Mens Saturday golf with 28 golfers playing to their handicap or better, might be time for a cheeky word to the greenkeepers about some fun pin placements in the future!

This weekend you again have the option for a blue tee or white tee competition. However this week it is a PAR competition for a little variety, if you want to be in for best gross though you will have to complete the hole if the course has already beaten you for PAR.

Next Saturday 6th December is the Mens Section Christmas Hamper, to qualify for the hamper prizes you must have played in 10 haggles during the year. If you are unsure of how many haggles you have played we will leave a list in the office for you to check if you have played the requisite number of haggles.

This years hamper will be played in 3 divisions split evenly according to the spread of handicaps in the field. Make sure to book your tee time in early as we suspect that demand to play will outstrip available tee times.

The new committee are working on next years programme and we hope to have the details finalised shortly.

Some changes we have decided to implement soon are: returning to winning golf balls for making a 2, and they will be a quality ball as well!

We will also introduce a 2s jackpot pool, which will be stuck if someone makes two 2s in the same round. This will jackpot each week unless of course someone takes it out with two 2s.

Hidden holes will also be slightly amended to having to be won outright by an individual as well, we will keep everyone updated on the size of the 2s jackpot and also the hidden holes jackpot.

Also we hope to meat packs as prizes again for the weekly raffles in the ‘clubhouse’ shortly as well, so some tasty dinners will be on the way after Saturday golf.

As always please feel free to share any constructive feedback to men@omokoroagolf.co.nz, happy golfing team!
