General Managers Message
Allan Botha

Dear Members,

It’s been a fantastic week at the club, and I wanted to share a few highlights and updates with you all.

Thursday Golf with the 9-Hole Women’s Group
I had the pleasure of joining the 9-hole Women’s player group this Thursday, and what a day it was! The weather was absolutely perfect—no wind, clear skies, and the course was in top condition. A huge thank you to our greenkeeping team for the exceptional greens.

I was grouped with some of the club’s finest: Rohanne, Sue, and Diane. Rohanne warmed up on the 10th and then went on a tear from the 11th to the 18th, racking up 23 stableford points and shooting a net 33—sharing 1st place! Sue wasn’t far behind with a net 35, finishing 3rd. I was definitely in good company and learned a valuable lesson: “Drive for show, putt for dough.”

Course Advisory Group Projects Update
I also attended the Course Advisory Group meeting this week. Here are the current projects underway:

  • Hole 1 & 2 – Project 6: Final stage in progress.
  • Hole 11 – Project 7/14: Starting around 12th October. Plans include bunker removal, drainage improvements, and a new front tee.
  • Hole 1 & 2 – Project 10: Will commence when the course is dry enough to transport soil.
  • Hole 10 – Project 15: Fairway will be sprayed out after the 3-day Vets Tournament at the end of November. A temporary par 3 will be in play during the grow-in phase.

Please find attached the most recent Course Plan in the link below

Players Group Meeting Highlights
Thursday’s Players Group meeting brought great discussions around course conditions, rules, player feedback, and communication. Club Captain Greig Neilson is committed to working closely with each player group captain to ensure feedback is heard and acted upon.

What’s Next?
Next week brings the monthly Board Meeting and hopefully another round of golf—this time with a different player group where I might be a bit more competitive!

Sunday Play

We have noticed and received a number of complaints about people playing on Sundays without tee bookings particularly off the 10th tee.

In and effort to try to resolve the frustration this behavior causes your fellow members, we would like to request that ALL players report to the shop before commencing play and ALL players MUST have a tee booking.

If you are on the course and see people jumping onto the course without bookings you can phone the shop so that we can make an effort to try to speak with them.

A Word Around The Greens
Nathan Kerr, Head Greenkeeper

I think we can all agree how good it is to have the sun out and to be playing golf on a dryer golf course.

Coring week is coming up on the first week of September, only a couple of weeks away.

We will be coring all the Tee blocks so the course will be still open to play golf but all the Tee markers will be set up on the red tee blocks at the start of the fairways for the week so we can get the job done efficiently.

After we have finished the process of coring the Tees we will start to core the fairways. Coring the  fairways is a big job so that process will be done over a period of a couple of weeks with play continuing while this is job is being done.

The green surfaces are cored once a year and this takes place on the first week of April every year. When we core the greens that is when the golf course has to be shut for play for the week.

Enjoy playing golf in the sunshine.

Japan Junior Fundraiser
Miller Barmes

Join us for a special golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday, September 6th at Omokoroa Golf Club, in support of Miller, George, and Jarvis—three young golfers and proud members of Omokoroa Golf Club. We’ve been given an incredible opportunity to travel to Japan as part of a Tauranga Boys’ College golf group, where we’ll represent our school and community in an international golfing experience.

The tournament will be played in a singles stableford format and is open to all players. Entry is $25 per person, with a great selection of prizes on offer, including vouchers and a well-stocked prize table. It promises to be a fun and competitive day out for golfers of all abilities.

All funds raised from the tournament will go directly toward helping us get to Japan and make the most of this exciting opportunity. We leave on September 17th, and your support will help us tee off on our first-ever international golfing adventure. Come along for a great day of golf, community spirit, and the chance to be part of our journey.

9 Hole Ladies
Yvonne Hoskins

This week in perfect weather conditions we played Round 7 of our Shootout competition with a nett haggle.  Thanks to the greenkeepers, the course is looking great, therefore, some good scores were recorded.  First on a count back was Rohanne Hancock with 33 nett, followed closely by Margaret Findsen. also, with 33.  Betty Murray came home with a 34 nett and Sue Smith had 35 on another countback.  Shirley Johnstone and Chris Kelly received a ball for each getting 35 nett.  Well done ladies.

We had the privilege of our new Manager - Allan Botha - playing golf with our ladies this week and as I understand it, some very good scores were obtained.  Thank you Allan for your company,  much appreciated.

Men's World
Ben Van den Borst

The days are starting to get a little longer and hopefully the worst of the winter wet is behind us. The course is starting to dry and hopefully we will be back to more normal playing conditions soon. I must say the greens are rolling the best I have ever seen them, with the 3rd and 4th greens almost being back to full health as well! A hearty congrats and thanks to our greenkeeping staff on the current presentation of the green surfaces.

This weekend is the 2nd round of the Carroll Cup, some great scores last week mean some players are off to a hot start. The beauty of a 4 round competition though is there is a long way to go and its hard to be awesome at golf every week! Remember with the Eclectic element to this years Carroll cup, if you have had ‘shocker’ somewhere in your round last weekend it might pay to knuckle down on that hole this week!

An early reminder that the Club Strokeplay Championship will be played over 4 consecutive Saturdays starting the 27th of September, with a reserve day being Sunday the 19th of October.

Happy Golfing everyone.

cheers

Presidents Message
John 'Swampy' Marsh

What a Great Spell of Weather for Golf!

It’s been fantastic to enjoy such perfect golfing weather, and our course continues to improve week by week.

It’s also great to see our new manager, Allan, out on the course introducing himself to all the player groups. Allan is not only a very good golfer, but also a lovely man. Welcome to the club, Allan!

You may notice a few disruptions around the clubhouse as items are being moved into storage containers in preparation for the upcoming construction work.

We also pause to extend our sincere sympathies to the family of Doug De Latour, who has passed away at the remarkable age of 96. Doug moved to Taupo to be closer to family and is fondly remembered here as a true gentleman. Rest in peace, Doug.

On the course, Colin has nearly completed the third stage of boxing for the No. 1 cart path, this will be poured soon. Don’t forget, Colin also has firewood available for sale.  Ph 027 577 1987.

A big thank you to KD, who has done a fantastic job levelling the cart path on No. 1. Please avoid driving on the newly seeded soil surrounds to help the grass establish.

Another huge thank you to the Friday Haggle group for their donation towards new drainage grills!

Happy golfing!
