 Men's World
Ben Van den Borst
We have been fairly lucky with the weather so far this winter for Saturday golf, lets hope we keep managing to get through with the course being open! Our procedure for Saturdays is if the course is initially closed, but with a chance of opening, we will be in ‘rain delay’.
So if for example you are scheduled to play in a matchplay game, expect to play unless the course is completely closed for the entire day.
We are starting to get to the pointy end of the handicap matchplay events, with the quarterfinals scheduled to be played tomorrow, Saturday 28th June. Some upsets have occurred along the way, which is why golf is such a great sport, the handicap system means anyone can play anyone and on their day come away with the win! Next Saturday will be semifinals with the finals due to be played on Saturday 12th July.
To be held in conjunction with the two handicap matchplay finals, we will be having our first version of a new ‘roll up’ day. We are asking all mens players who want to play on Saturday 12th July to please register for the day with your preferred time slot. Players will be drawn randomly together and your tee time posted early in the week, so you will know when you are playing well in advance of the day. At the last Mens AGM, there were some players who lamented the days of the ‘roll up’. As promised then, the committee would bring this type of roll of up event as an option for everyone during the year. So please register and take the opportunity to perhaps play a round of golf with some other members who you might not normally play with, a great way to meet, or get to know better, some other guys who play at the club.
Please click this link to register for playing on the day: https://www.omokoroagolf.co.nz/Event%20Registration?competitionid=1137681
The first 104 entrants will be accepted
We also have the upcoming pairs event, where we are slightly amending the format this year. The event is two rounds played over two consecutive Saturdays. The first round will be best net on each individual hole for your pair, so if one of you has a blow out, hopefully your partner plays the hole well so your team score doesn’t take a massive beating. The system will still calculate your team score from your completed individual scorecard, so we will also have individual prizes for the day as well. The second round is Canadian foursomes where you play together, both players tee off but then you choose the best tee shot and play alternate shot from that point until you complete the hole. You must use a minimum of 8 tee shots for each player.
Even if you don’t play the first round you will still be able to play on the dat as the second round will also function as its own individual golf event in its own right. The office will help find you a partner if needed. The winning pair will be the pair with the lowest net score for the two combined rounds. We will post when and how to register for the Pairs Event next week.
Our Handicap matchplay team captained by Greg Neilson has unfortunately bowed out of this years Bay of Plenty competition, going down in a playoff last Sunday after the match finished all square at the completion of the individual matches. Well done to the team for representing Omokoroa GC this year.
Lets hope the rain stays away and we can get some golf in this weekend.
