Old Geezer's Rant
Swampy

First on the list – it is great to see so many projects on the move.  See the new notice board, as requested by members, adjacent to the starter’s office.  Lots of happenings.

Volunteers What a wonderful club we have.  Our members give up so much precious time to make our surroundings look so beautiful.

Shirley’s been busy in the garden again by the flagpoles.  The ponytail palms we have had for more than 30 years are now in Shirley’s garden, with the new palms supplied by our dynamic Bar Manager Rach at the main entrance.

Colin Gee, our Course Convenor is apparently not sleeping too well as most of his days are spent lying around the golf course.  Marcus has to remind him what his address is! KD has left his sleeping bag in the green shed.

The new troll bridge has started. Cart users please be careful when coming off the ramp.

All licenced cart owners please respect our beautiful course.

Kudos to Nate, Mike and Shane we are so lucky to have your hard work and expertise, the greens are almost there after coring.  The course is looking awesome.

Members News – I had the pleasure of playing with the Doc’s wife, Christine on Vets day.  What a bundle of energy.  I still can’t get the song out of my head.  “Slow down, you move too fast”

Welcome back - Pink and Jonathan from your travels and Mark Middleton back from injury.  Nice to see you all back.

Peter Day – great to see you enjoying the sun on the 13th.

Saturday Ladies – what a buzz you give the clubhouse.

Well, I guess that’s a big enough rant.

Welcome to all our new members who by now have realised the friendliest picturesque club in the Bay is now part of their golfing lives.

Happy golfing, Swampy (aka President)

Annan Law Saturday Men's Club Day
This Saturday we play the first round of the Reg Carter Trophy (aggregate of 3 nett rounds). Scores will count for qualifying for the A-One Kitchens and Interiors Shootout Final.

Entries are being taken for the Omokoroa Cup (Handicap Matchplay) which start on the 28th May. The cut off day for entry is 21st May, when the draw will be done. Entry list is on the notice board in the Mens Changing Room.

Pennants Interclub
Our Championship team lost to Ohope 2-7. With Ben Taylor, Richard Apanui, Ben Van Den Borst and Denne Stewart unavailable, three other players were called in. Stewart Green, Ravi Shearman and Kellie Orchard all played well, but Ohope were just too good. The Team now awaits the result of the Mount Vs Lakeview match and then a relegation match if the Mount win. Thanks go to Neil Howard for managing the Team.

The Intermediate side lost on a play-off match after being level at 4.5-4.5 points against Taupo. Brett Dingle was the nominated player and was pipped on the extra hole.

In the Juniors our Team had a convincing win 7-2 over Lakeview and now play Ohope at Kawerau on Sunday. Play well guys!

Eagles Foursomes Event
The annual Tournament run by the Eagles held at our Club is being held on the 19th June. There is mixed and mens divisions with an entry fee of $15. Foursomes is where one player tees off the odd holes and the other partner, the even holes. They hit alternate shots until ball is holed out. The Eagles helps Junior Golf and the Halberg Trust so do enter the event and have some fun.

Hole-in-one Time
A number of Omokoroa Players, played at the Kinloch, Waireki and Tieke Golf Courses last week. The highlight of the trip was an Ace at Tieke by Ken Holyoake on the 13th Hole. It is a short, downhill hole and with the flag at the front of the green, measured only 84 metres. Ken caressed the ball, which bounced twice and popped into the hole. Bravo Ken!

Mens Committee Meeting
We meet before play this Saturday, so if anyone has any issues, please speak with a committee member.

Round 1 of our Strokeplay Competition was completed successfully with an impressive total of 34 combatants taking to the greens.
For those of you who are unsure, Strokeplay is a Championship in it’s own right and there is a Trophy for the winner!
These two rounds also serve as a lead in to the Matchplay competition starting on 6th May and will go something like this.
In the Matchplay field and in each Division the lowest Strokeplay scorer will be matched against the highest scorer until 16 players have been matched up.

Results for Round 1 were:
Division 1 playing Front 9:
Trevor Smith                      44
Allan Hoskins                     45
Allan Winter                       47 (on count back)
Lynton Holmes                   47 (on count back)

Division 2 playing Back 9:
Phil Stanbury                      47
Chris Hogan                        48
David Bennett                     49
Peter Davies                       50 (on count back)

Note that 18 Hole members aren’t eligible for the Matchplay Competition so we should be able to fit all 9 Holers into the Matchplay Schedule.

Next week, 19th May we play Round 2 of the Strokeplay and please ensure that you book on your correct Front or Back 9.
Division 1 ( 27.8 and under) play the Back 9, Division 2 (27.9 and over) play the Front 9.
The Division you were in for Round 1 is the Division you must remain in for Round 2 even if your handicap changes during the week.

Looking forward to seeing you all in force again next week.

Balls, Brews and Burgers Men’s Golf Day
The club is hosting this event which is run by the Omokoroa No1 School.  It’s a fund-raiser for the school aimed at the Dad’s and has a focus on Men’s health.  They have some extra spots available, and they would like to extend the invitation to our members.  See the attached poster for entry and contact details.

Accounts and Club Assistant Role
We have started advertising for the above role.  This is the role Barbara is currently filling.  Barbara was employed on a casual basis to give us immediate help when we needed it, and to help us scope the role and develop systems, while giving us the time to understand what resource we need in the club moving forward.  The plan for the new role is to work in the shop on Thursdays, provide accounting support, and also provide cover for leave for the bar/shop.  The role will be 15-20 hours a week.  The board is committed to following good process, which is why the role has been advertised.
