What a fantastic night last Friday! We were treated to some great entertainment from Two’s Company and friends (Peter, Jackie, Jenna and our very own Bruce Lauchlan and Partrick Hawkins). Everything from Pavarotti to Michael Jackson – and plenty in between. Check out some photos on www.facebook.com/Omokoroagolf

Hopefully we can arrange another one for later in the year.

Twilight (Hot news)

I have now also secured a PaRnz Golfing Holiday as part of the sponsorship for Twilight. They will be sponsoring entries to one of their Tournaments in NZ as part of the end of season prize table. This is in addition to very generous sponsorship from The Clubroom and Bethlehem Butchery. I have posted the Twilight Flyer and Competition sheet details by the Ladies and Men’s Cloak Room. Email me on omokcaptain@gmail.com if you are available to help run the Twilight event.

Blocked Drains
Some of the drains around the golf course are blocked up with tree roots and sediment so over the next month there will be work being done to un block them so please be understanding of any mess while we work on these issues.

Cart Use during Winter
I have been impressed with the members who use carts as you all seem to be sticking to the cart paths and the rough, keep it up please. I have been allowing cart use for the members only until the course is dryer but there will be days through the winter where it will be too wet to allow carts on the course at all.

Par 3 Sand bins
On all our par 3 tees and on the practice tee there are green sand bins full of sand to fill your divots in. Me and the team have noticed that not many golfers are actually utilising the sand after taking a divot. The Benefit of replacing your divot with sand is to give the grass a chance to grow back into the sand instead of growing back into a divot hole and the sand also speeds the process up for the turf to grow back, so please take the time to fill your divots with the sand available.

New Greens Team Member
I would like to welcome Mike Harding who has been employed as the assistant superintendent green keeper.

Mike comes with a wealth of knowledge as he has been in the turf industry for over 25 years so when you see him out on the course please give him a warm Omokoroa welcome.

Jean-marc had a superb round nett 64 and unfortunately was not at prize giving when his name was drawn out to win the lucky $250 member draw. Gordy Wingate won the prize with the re-draw.

Matchplay Championships

The Ladies’ Matchplay Championships Finals were held last Sunday in rather unpleasant weather conditions. Congratulations to winners and indeed to all who participated. This year’s field was the largest we’ve had in some years. Special thanks to unplaying members who braved the elements to support the players, also to the inteprid caddies and markers. Our awards presenter this year was Jessie Savage whose name appears many times on several of the trophies over the 40 years she has played at Omokoroa. Thank you, Jessie.

Waihi winners
Beating out 28 other teams at Waihi Golf course last Friday in the ladies teams best 3 of 4 Stableford competition was a team that included 3 of our ladies. Congratulations to the winning team: Zoe Baguley-Skayman, Liz Woods, Deborah Rose (Omokoroa) and Billie-Jo Simmons (Waihi) winning with 118 points.

It was very nice to go and win on the Waihi course after their ladies team took out our ladies tournament earlier in the year. Written articles seen in Sunlive and the Katikati advertiser sports section this week as well. Good promo for our club.

Covid cards laminated
The wonderful Sandra will be able to laminate your Covid vaccination cards at the office.  We have an envelope behind the office desk where we will hold them when you hand them in. Sandra will then do a batch each Tuesday when she is in and your laminated card can then then be picked up again next time your in.

Carts Team Thanks
Massive thanks to our wonderful team of cart cleaning volunteers. The carts are once again looking fabulous and we are extremely grateful to you all for putting you hand up to help out.

Compressor
Thanks to everyone who has reported in on the compressor being faulty. Turns out what it needs is a new handle and this is being arranged.

Hedge to 10th
The piecemeal hedge running down to the 10th green is being removed. It will be replaced with Camelia hedging which is being put around the course to start creating a more cohesive look to our plantings. Volunteers are taking care of this project. Kevin Donald is the man to see if you have expertise and want to be part of the team working on this project.

Produce Stand
Thanks to all the generous suppliers of Avocados, kiwifruit, lemons and limes. I am wondering if we might have someone who has a relatively small unused produce stand they would gift the club?

Or perhaps one of you handy people could build us a nice one? Preferably with wheels so the office can move it in when windy. I think it would be nice to get these items up off the ground and when spring/summer rolls around we might even start to get from some of you smart gardeners, a nice overflow of vegetables/tomato’s coming in as well. Let’s see.

Leaf Blower
I am looking for an electric leaf blower for the office. This is so in the mornings the office staff can quickly make the entrance look a little nicer. Especially after heavy wind and foot traffic.

If you have one you don’t use perhaps you might think about donating it? Or if one of the players groups would like to help with this then please speak to me.

Successful social event
Well done Pink and her team and Jarrod in the kitchen for a very enjoyable roast and boogie event last Friday night. You are to be very highly commended. It is great to see members enjoying a fun social night out. That dance floor was HOT!

Medical Register
A reminder if you have a health condition that may ever be a problem when playing here on the golf course please take the time to notify the office so we can add you to our medical register. We want to be able to give the first responders in any unforeseen event as much help to help you as possible.

Operation 36 – Junior Coaching
This coming week The Clubroom Academy and Juniors kick off again with Hayden Beard. The lessons this term are for 1 hour on a Thursday afternoon over 8 weeks, with a beginners (3.30pm) and advanced program (4.30pm).  $145

Wednesday the 4th of August

Next Wednesday's Vet’s competition is the first round of the Grandma and Grandpa Trophy and is a stableford event, and as is the case every week, the Shootout continues.

Week just been

Winter golf is definitely with us. A slightly smaller than usual field turned out on Wednesday, but it was great to see thirteen ladies in the field, the biggest number for a wee while. Well down ladies and hopefully a good sign for the weeks ahead.

Wednesday was a mixed pairs competition, a format that I enjoy. Well done Sandra Gee and John Keats for their narrow but meritorious win. Some great stableford results were produced given the testing conditions out on the course. Some wind was tossed in for a bit of variation. Well done Gus Gaskin (41), Dereck Scott (38) and Sandra Gee (34) the winners in their respective Divisions.

The July Lucky Draw winner was Terry Golder.

17,18,19 November / 3-day Vet’s Mixed Pairs Tournament.

The number of entries is steadily climbing and at the time of writing this week 52 players have entered the November 3-day tournament but still only a handful of locals. If you are interested in playing and don’t have a partner let me know and I will see if I can help, or you can use the ‘find a partner’ function of the NZVGA website. Get your entries in guys. nzvga.co.nz gets you there.

Events coming up

Events that people may be interested are.

   - 4 August, Vet’s Club Day, First round of Grandma and Grandpa Trophy

   - 9 August, BOP Vets, Whakatane (entry form in men’s locker room)

   - 23 August, BOP Vets, Omokoroa (entry form in the locker room)

   - 30 August BOP Vets, Springfield (entry form in men’s locker room)

   - 4 October, Men’s Omokoroa Country Estate Quad’s, Omokoroa

   - 17-18-19 November, 3-day mixed pairs, Match play, Omokoroa

Guys let’s support the Springfield event. Despite the change in dates, they have already committed eight players for Omokoroa.
