Board talk

March 2021 - Board Meeting update

Firstly, the Board would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Jonathon Lewis who is stepping down from his Course Convenor’s role. In the Convenor’s role, Jonathan has offered many hours of selfless service. He has done a great job in Coordinating with volunteers and ground staff to ensure the smooth running of the course. The Board will accept nominations for a replacement before the AGM and during the transition phase, we are grateful to Kevin Donald (KD) for taking responsibility for this role.

The Board also recognises the amount of work put in by our new Administrative Manager (Deb).

We would ask that all members recognise the amount of work that is accomplished by this role and to be as supportive as possible.

The Board are most appreciative of the efforts made by club members to abide by the Covid protocols and measures put in place, whilst we were in Level 2 - especially in the online booking of tee times.

Thank you to John Marsh for the work he has done to update/renovate the toilets.

We are pleased to inform you that our Membership has grown by 15% in the past 6 months.

Please be aware that Coring is planned to start on the 12th April. During this time, some car park maintenance is also most likely to be taking place.

New cameras are now all in place. In respect of our ongoing efforts to ensure the security of the Golf Club, we would like to hear from members living close to the course, who would be willing to provide their mobile phone numbers as part of a ‘security ring’. This would be most appreciated.

We are very grateful to John Herder, who has made a most generous offer to purchase an airway resuscitator for the club.

Yesterday, 4th March kicked off Round 1 of this year’s Nett Shootout.

After a brief, damp start the weather quickly improved and all 19 players, including 14 Shootout contenders, enjoyed an excellent morning of golf.

Just a pity a few more of you weren’t around to appreciate just how amazing our golf course is on a perfect, still, autumn day.

Round 2 of the Shootout is scheduled for Thursday 8th April.

Results for the days Nett Haggle were:

  • Fred Hartley 32 (what a start for Shootout contention!)
  • Tony Welch 34
  • Malcolm Cartwright 34
  • Kevin Bowick 35

All players can take part in the Haggle but only 9 Hole members are eligible for the Shootout.

Raffle Prizes went to:

  • Spencer Tankard Wine
  • Bruce Blair Chocolates
  • Debbie Hardaker $10

Next week we need all hands on deck for Round 1 of the Stableford Cup and the Putting Trophy.

The same rules apply, play 6 rounds and drop your worst two.

To be in contention players must play at least 4 rounds!

Happy Golfing!

A beautiful day for golf this week and a large field of 47 ladies contested the Bev Caithness and Association Stableford event.

Division 1 winner was Dee McCrea with 41 from Martina Keir on 38.
Dee also took home the Stars Trophy for her barefoot wade on the 6th to retrieve her tee shot. Carol Roper continued her winning streak to top Division 2 with 46 from Lois Amaru on 42.
Nearest the pin on 11 was Elaine Gavin.

The big news of the week was the Pennants Team’s win at Fairview on Monday by 10 points from their nearest rivals. Especially commendable as Monday’s weather in Katikati was gale force winds and squally showers.

The 18 hole ladies had a win by 10 points from their nearest rivals and the 9 hole ladies shared a win with Otumoetai and Te Puke. Photo: The winning 18 hole team: (L to R) Pink Leow, Cherry Reehal, Maxine Cotter, Cathy Berry and Janice Murray. (Absent Barbara Aitken)

Pennants Interclub

Our Championship team were beaten by the Tauranga Club 6-3 on Sunday, while the Intermediates were plopped 5-4 by the Mount Club. This week the Championship side has a bye, the Intermediates play against Omanu at Fairview, the Juniors play against Tauranga at Otumoetai and the Presidents play at home against Tauranga. All the best to you all.

The Players Championship

This tournament is being played starting on Friday (NZ time). Some players call it the fifth major and played on the Sawgrass Course makes for superb viewing. My pick is Mathew Fitzpatrick to win.

The Green Shed
Kevin Donald

A very big thank you to the members who turned up on Tuesday morning to transfer the turf on the eighth green. Good to see a few new faces at a working bee. A great effort by all.

Talking of working bees, we have coring week just around the corner. Nathan has investigated the possibility of getting a harvester to remove the cores but timing does not suit so it will be back to status quo. He will need core pushers and removers on the Monday and possibly Tuesday morning and has advised me that he will only core the greens and not the surrounds.

The bund is nearing completion and planting is not far from happening. Now that the temparatures are dropping and more frequent rain is occurring grass seeding is not far away so the foreshore will start looking as it should be.

There are a lot of pitch marks left unrepaired on the greens. Please, if your ball does happen to land on the green, find the dent and fix it.

Championship Pennants Team Report

The Championship Pennant team lost a close encounter 6-3 to a young Tauranga side at Te Puke last Sunday.

The morning foursomes saw Denne Stewart & Andrew Pratt win 3&2 and Neil Howard & Richy Apanui win 4&3 and lunch tasted good with a 2-1 advantage. The afternoon was much tougher with Richy being the only winner amongst a number of close games.
