Covid 19 Update
The government has announced we are back to Level 1 here in the Bay of Plenty.

This means all player groups and activities/roll-ups are back to normal. All the ball machines and drink machines are uncovered and the seats have been restored in the main room. See you in there for a social drink.

Casual games must still be booked in on the DotGolf system.

Did I hear you say we needed rain? Well, we sure had it big time on Monday. But the golf course is now looking greener and in perfect condition for my debut to play in the upcoming 3 Days Vets Pairs Tournament from Wednesday. (see attached photo - a big difference between Monday & Tuesday).

Just a few updates & reminders from me this week.

11th Fairway (back in play from 17th February)

The 11th Fairway is now back in-play. Players are advised to tee up their golf ball should it land on the new grassed areas.

8th Green (re-shaping on 22nd February)

The current 8th green will be dug up for re-shaping from 22nd February as part of the Foreshore project.  A temporary green and Tee will be in-place, distance kept at 122m).

All the Playing groups have kicked started their 2021 Golf Competitions. I would like to wish everyone a good year of golf and for those representing the club for competitions, all the best.

In spite of the annoying odd shower of slightly damp rain 25 hardy souls headed for the Tees excited at the thought of all those +’s showering down on their score cards.

Sadly most were disappointed!! All they got were wet score cards!

Format for the day was Stableford playing Par with the added challenge of playing 3 Tees ie 3 Tee shots each off Blue, White and Yellow Tees.

Lots of fun and laughs and a good game of golf all round.

The prize money for the Par Challenge went to:

Division 1:

  • 1st Fred Hartley 1
  • 2nd Tony Welch 1
  • 3rd Allan Hoskins 1
  • 4th Robert Hay 0

Division 2:

  • 1st Trevor Smith 2
  • 2nd Murray Wills 1
  • 3rd Bruce Blair 1
  • 4th Ian Rayson 1
  • Spencer Tankard scored a 2 on #4

Next Thursday 18th we have an away game at Fairview Golf Club.

Tee off time is 10:50am so plan to arrive around 9:30am.

The format will be Stableford and there will be no Raffle.

Many thanks to the team of volunteers who turned out at short notice (and in the rain!) to remove the turf from the 8th tee block. This is now being stored alongside the ladies 3rd tee, and can hopefully be used elsewhere on the course. The level of the 8th tee block will now be raised and relaid with new turf.

All play rained out this Tuesday and competitions subsequently postponed until next week.

I can however report that this year’s winners of the Summer Cup are (drum roll, please):
Division I: Martina Keir Division
2: Carol Roper

Well done both. Your trophies will be presented at our Closing Day and Awards ceremony in November.

The Saturday ladies had a sunny day for their Opening Day last Saturday. Hidden Partners is always a fun format and Debbie Clark and Lynda Smith must have been very happy when they came in to see they’d been put together as both had played well and clocked up more than a few stablefords. The rest of us with our mediocre scoring were more interested in seeing what goodies Siobhain had in her golf cart every time she came near. A great day, organised extremely well by Liz and Christine.

Annan Law Saturday Men’s Club Day

We will still continue with our Haggle and last round of the Carroll Cup this week. There are a lot of players still in contention to win the Carroll Cup so it makes for an exciting finish.

The lucky member draw for $250 was won by a new young player, Ben Petherick who plays off a 9 handicap and hits a very big ball. Well done Ben.

The first round of Interclub Pennants starts on Sunday when our Championship team under the leadership of Neil Howard play Kawerau at the Tauranga Golf Club. The draw is on the BOP Golf website if you want to follow them. Play well team.

Club Matchplay Championships

Entries are being taken on the list in the men’s changing room for the first round on February 27th. The entries close on Tuesday 23rd when the draw will be done in time to post the tee times in the newsletter. The seeding is done according to the handicap index rankings as on the Tuesday 27th and you are locked into that division for the event.

Finally we are in a uncertain situation with COVID-19 protocols and are directed by recommendations from NZ Golf and the Board. With tee bookings we may have difficulty getting the Matchplay tee times locked in each week but we will do our best. Competitors can arrange to play their matches in their own time as mutually agreed as long as it is completed before the next Saturday. We would like a big entry so do enter and make it a better event.
