General Managers Message

Omokoroa Golf Club – Members Update

From Allan Botha, General Manager

Good to see the sun again at last — and let’s hope we’re in for a decent dry spell.

We’ve certainly had our fair share of rain this year. Mike Harding, our Assistant Greenkeeper, reported earlier this week that we’ve had in excess of one metre (1,000mm) of rainfall since the start of the year. By comparison, our usual rainfall total from January to April is around 400mm, so it’s been a very tough period for the course, members, volunteers and staff.

Tieke Golf Estate Visit

What a great day out! Yesterday, 12 of us visited Tieke Golf Estate for a taste experience — and it did not disappoint. We started the day with a round of golf on their beautifully manicured course, which certainly helped build up an appetite.

After golf, we enjoyed their menu featuring pizzas, platters, crispy southern fried chicken, fish and chips, etc. My personal favourite — beef fat fries… wow, they were incredibly moreish!

Overall, it was an awesome experience and gave us a real feel for what our new clubhouse will be like, from the atmosphere and look through to future food and beverage options. A big thank you to everyone who joined me — it was a fantastic day out.

Calling All Volunteers – Mangrove Seedling Removal

We will be holding a mangrove seedling removal operation on Monday, 4 May.

This initiative has been run annually by John Herder, and this may well be his last one as he prepares to hand over the reins. If you’re able to help out, your support would be greatly appreciated, and it would be great to give John a strong turnout. Click the link below to join the "Mangrove Team"

Farewell to Tony Parkinson
Tony has resigned his membership due to medical reasons after many years with the club. Tony also generously volunteered his time helping with mechanical issues and repairs around the club. Thank you, Tony, for your dedication and assistance over the years — we wish you all the very best.

Retirement – Sharon Brown
Our friendly bar lady, Sharon Brown, has resigned and is heading into retirement. We thank Sharon for her service and acknowledge her for a job well done. She will certainly be missed.

Driving Range Ball Pickup
The driving range ball pickup has been carried out by Anya Apanui, supported by her dad Richard, for a number of years. Thank you both for doing a great job. Their contract has now finished, and we are looking for junior golfers to take on this role.

If you are Junior golf member of the club between 12 and 18 years old and would like to earn some pocket money, please click link below to apply:

What a stunning day we had this week to play golf.  Sunny, no wind, no rain, a perfect day.

This week we played 'all irons' off the red tees.  There were some very good scores, but some not-so-good-ones.  No excuses because the day was great for golf.

Winners on the day were Michelle Ballard with 20 stableford points; Ali Howarth and Brenda Anson with 17; Janet Burmeister, Amelia Hempill and Diane Mahony with 16.  Well done to the winners.

After 2 weeks of the Captains trophy we have Michael Surry with the Clubhouse lead, followed by Stephen Davis 2 shots back. With the Anzac long weekend this week, the Captains trophy will have a week off but will be back for the following 2 Saturdays

This Saturday is a normal haggle for those of us who are home for the long weekend, and is also a shootout scoring weekend.

Remember that the Saturday 9th of May also doubles as the qualifying round for the  Omokoroa Cup & Presidents cup, our Handicap Matchplay events for the year. So make sure you register a qualifying score if you wish to play the handicap matchplay events on Saturday 9th May.

The bay of plenty handicap pennants competition also begins shortly, if you are interested in playing handicap pennants for the club please see Greig Nielson or please email him clubcaptain@omokoroagolf.co.nz

And on a final note, Zabe Orchard has decided to step down from the mens player committee, I would like to thank Zabe for his extremely valuable contribution over the last couple of years. Zabes wide experience from other regions (and ability as a golfer) has been awesome to have on the committee. We are always open to other members joining the committee so please feel free to send me an email men@omokoroagolf.co.nz if you would like to be involved.

Enjoy your long weekend and happy golfing.

Vets Vibes
Ian Howells

The second round of the Sunvue Strokeplay championship was completed today on a golf course that was playable but wet with all the recent rain. The haggle was Nett and Coffee club shootout qualifying continued.

Sadly, Tony Parkinson, one of our long-standing Vets, has decided to retire from golf. We wish him all the best for the future.
