Kia ora koutou,

The year is quickly drawing to a close, and it’s been an exciting time around our Club. Our playing groups have delivered a strong calendar of events, culminating in Shootouts and Christmas Hampers which are a great way to head into the festive season.

I want to acknowledge the efforts of our player-group committees, especially our group captains. Each month the captains meet with our Club Manager to discuss how golf is being delivered at our Club and to identify opportunities for improvement. I’m always impressed by their dedication to supporting our members and strengthening the Club as a whole.

Highlights

Since my last update, I’ve been speaking with many members to develop a deeper understanding of how things work and where the opportunities lie. What has stood out is the passion people have for this Club. Even when the topic is something that could be going better, it’s clear that our members have the best interests of the Club at heart.

Many members have mentioned how much Club communication has improved recently, with plenty of praise for the excellent job Allan is doing with our weekly newsletters. With so much happening each week, keeping everyone informed is a challenge, but I think we can all agree that we’re heading in the right direction.

In the past few weeks I’ve also had productive meetings with Nathan, our Head Greenskeeper, and the Course Advisory Group (CAG). I’m personally keen to see our course presentation match the standard set by our new Clubhouse, and it’s reassuring to know that many others share this ambition.

Another project underway is the development of a Sponsorship Plan, which I’ve been working on with Allan, Des Hammond and Daryl Muir. Its purpose is to bring consistency to our sponsorship offerings, ensure we’re delivering great value, and confirm that our rates are fair and fit for purpose.

Future Work

With support from the CAG, I’ve begun working with Lynda Smith on a Course Presentation Plan (CPP). This plan will outline all the visual and aesthetic elements of our course and the standards we aim to achieve. It will sit alongside the Course Masterplan and serve as an operational document to support the work of the CAG and help Nathan and his team with ongoing course maintenance and presentation.

Related to this is the regeneration of the Green Fingers group. This is a group of volunteers who do some great work around the course keeping our gardens looking great. If you have a few hours each month that you can commit ti working alongside a great bunch of humans, please get in touch with Lynda Smith: lyndylou57@xtra.co.nz

Over recent months I’ve also been reflecting on conversations with members, feedback to the Board and CAG, and responses to my previous newsletter. It’s clear that members need a simple, reliable way to ask questions, share opinions, and receive timely responses.

To support this, Allan and I have introduced a Member Feedback Form. Members can use the form to ask a question, raise a concern, or share an idea. Whether your feedback is related to the course, the Club or anything else we want to hear from you! Each week, Allan, Nathan and I will meet to review the feedback and prepare a response, either directly to the you or via the weekly newsletter. We hope this makes it clear that your voice matters and gives you an easy way to get information to the right people.

To access the form, please click here or scan the QR code on the posters in the office and marquee.

Coming Events

As Club Captain, I’m fortunate each year to host a series of Club events. These are a great chance to strengthen our Club culture and offer something a bit different from a regular weekly haggle. I’m still shaping the programme, but one thing is certain: every dollar of your entry fee will go back into the prize pool. If you’d like to help bring these events to life, please get in touch.

Christmas Hamper – Saturday 13 December

Our annual Christmas Hamper is nearly here!
The event will feature prizes across two men’s divisions and one ladies’ division (subject to entry numbers). The format is singles stableford, with some fun mini-competitions during prizegiving for the sharpshooters and long putters.

Entry is $25, and you can book a morning or afternoon tee time on the club website, your Golf NZ app or in person at the office. Things get busy before each field starts, so please make things easier for our team by keeping credit in your house account and pressing that magic button when you print your scorecard. Our goal is to fill two fields - this would create something close to a $5,000 prize pool for the day!

New Year’s Eve Tournament

Mark your calendars for a fantastic New Year’s Eve event!
This will be a pairs stableford tournament - with a twist. Every hole will have a unique challenge requiring strategy, luck, and a bit of good golf. I expect this will be a very popular event, so look out for my next update with full entry details.

See you out on the fairways!
