Omokoroa Golf Club Newsletter

From the Desk of Allan Botha – General Manager

10 October 2025

Dear Members,

We’re thrilled to bring you some exciting updates from the Club this week!

Temporary Liquor License Approved!

We’re pleased to announce that the Club received its temporary liquor license this past Monday at 8:30am. It was such great news that we almost celebrated with a drink—just kidding! But there were definitely a few hoorays and cheers echoing through the office. This is a big milestone for us and sets the tone for the exciting weeks and months ahead.

VETS Day Success

After a soggy start to the week, Wednesday’s semi clear skies brought out a fantastic turnout for VETS Day, with 83 players taking to the course. It was a great opportunity to put our temporary facilities to the test—and they passed with flying colours!

The new check-in system worked brilliantly, with scorecards generated quickly and payments captured accurately. A special shout-out to Ian Graham, who pulled me aside to say how smoothly everything ran. Thank you, Ian!

A huge thank you to all the staff and technicians working tirelessly behind the scenes to make this happen. The Plastic Palace (aka The Marquee) looked fantastic with every table packed—see photo below!

New Self-Service Checkout System

We’ve implemented another system upgrade to make your check-in experience even smoother. Members with house account credit can now use the self-service checkout on the existing kiosks in the office. Simply select House Account as your payment method for haggle fees and skip the queue for EFTPOS or cash payments.

Guess the Score – Final Winner

Last Saturday marked the final round of Guess the Score, and Bruce Connet came closest with his prediction of 32–23 to the ABs. Well done, Bruce! Please collect your golf ball from the office.

Also, a reminder to other winners from the past two weeks—your golf balls are still waiting for you at the office!

4 October Rugby

  • Brian Currie guessed 33–24 to NZ
  • Bruce Connett guessed 32–23 to NZ

Ryder Cup - 13–15 to the European team

  • Paul Howell
  • Daz Dixon
  • Brian Currie

Clubhouse Build Update

The build project is progressing well. Asbestos removal is set to be completed this week, and demolition of the old clubhouse will begin next week. We’re on track and excited for what’s to come.

Temporary Site Map Update

Please see the updated site map below. On the new map you will see walkways and an updated area for parking golf carts. Please park your carts in these locations to help us keep access to and from the marquee clear.

Thank you to all members for your support during the move over the past two weeks. Your kind words and cake kept us going—you know who you are, and we appreciate you!

A Word Around The Greens
Nathan Kerr, Head Greenkeeper

The fairway coring is now complete and the result is pleasing too see with the fairways that have grown back in from the coring are looking very healthy with solid growth.

The greens have been virti cut which is the process of thinning the leaf and then sand top dressed with sand.

This process happens monthly to create a smoother putting surface and to keep the greens firmer and faster to putt on.

The tree clean up after the storm we had a few weeks ago is nearly complete with just the big logs out on the course left to chop up and remove to the firewood heap at the maintenance shed.

The stumps of the fallen trees have now been removed by the stump grinder contractor we use who does a very effective job of removing them.

Big thank you to the volunteers that have helped with the clean up of the trees.

We have started planting the left side of the 10th green, behind the 11th tee with native grasses.

This will be a theme around the course moving forward in waste areas of rough where no golf is generally played and will also reduce the rough mowing required for these areas that are out of play, also looks good and is lowering amount of hours to mow the rough.

Enjoy your golf

Kaimai Tray

Many thanks to the crew that signed up to represent the Club at the Kaimai Tray at Omanu last weekend. It was a most excellent event with the highlight being the great vibe in the clubhouse afterwards. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event at Morrinsville!

Temporary Clubhouse

What a great start we’ve had in our new clubhouse! Many thanks to Daryl Muir, Swampy, Kerry Duggan, Murray Bell, our excellent staff and everyone else who lent a hand to make it happen. I’m sure we’ll enjoy many good times over the next year while we watch the new clubhouse taking shape!

Christmas Tournament - 13 December

Please save the date for our annual Christmas tournament. Thank you to the people who have already reached out to me with suggestions for this year’s event, and I'd love to hear more! If you have an idea on how to make this event a winner, please get in touch with me at clubcaptain@omokoroagolf.co.nz

9 Hole Ladies
Yvonne Hoskins

This week we played Round 1 of our Stroke Play Championship.  This was played on the front nine.  We also ran a gross haggle with two divisions - Division 1 - front and Division 2 - back.  Winners on the front nine were Sue Smith with a very acceptable 48; followed by Jacqui Crossfield with 54 and Rohanne Hancock with 56.

Winners on the back nine were - Brenda Anson with 55; Shirley Johnstone 56; and Maria Wagg 56.  Pauline Thurston and Bev Hansen both received balls.  Well done ladies.

Next week is Round 2 of our Stroke Play which will be played on the back nine.  Fingers crossed for the weather to stay fine.

9 Hole Men
Fred Hartley

Yesterday 9th October was our first experience of the newly completed, temporary course facilities.

The weather was fine and warm and we were all able to enjoy a good round of golf followed by food and socialising in the Marquee.

Everyone was happy!

Yesterday was also the Final of the 2025 Shootout Competition with 10 finalists vying for a share of the $275 prize purse.

Results were:

Winner

Frank Baggenstos

Runner-up

Allan Hoskins

Third place

Tom Martin

Playing on the Back 9 the two finalist took the Shootout down to the wire.

Both Frank and Allan made excellent approach chips onto the 18th with both landing within a couple of club lengths from the Pin.

Allan was slightly further away and had the first Put. Unfortunately his ball just slid past the hole.

Frank made no mistakes and holed out with his first put to take the $50 prize.

In a rare coincidence Frank was also the top scorer for the best 4 of 6 Shootout Rounds and is a very deserving winner of the Shootout Trophy.

Frank also scored a Net 33 further reinforcing his dominance! Congratulations Frank!

Players not in the Shootout played Stableford on the Front 9.

Top scorers were:

Larry Stocks

21

Blair Francis

19

Steve Crossfield

19

With the formal part of our 9 Hole Group’s competition rounds now over we head into our informal program with a variety of interesting events to look forward to.

Next week 16th October we play Oddball with the format being Stableford. More on this event to come.

Well done to those golfers who completed the 2nd round of the strokeplay championship last Saturday in challenging conditions! After 2 rounds some divisions are very tight indeed, so another good effort this Saturday could set you up for a crack at the title next Saturday.

The tee times for the 4th round (and reserve round on Sunday 19th) will be posted by Sunday evening. There has been a slight hiccup with dotgolf not blocking out the 1st tee for next Saturday for the final round of the club champs, so if you have booked next Saturday there may be some changes to your booking, especially if you have booked from the 1st tee. All players in the club strokeplay will begin their rounds after 11am next Saturday for the final round. If you are not in the strokeplay you will be able to book from the 10th tee and also in the morning field as usual. Reminder that strokeplay competitors cannot play early next Saturday and then play their final round later – anyone playing the course before their tee time will be disqualified.

Two rounds left to go in the shootout qualifying! We will update the standings after this weekend so everyone can see where they stand. The top 19 qualifiers will be in the shootout on Saturday 1st November.

The champion of champions event will be held on Saturday 8th November with the Mens AGM to follow at the completion of play on the day.

Enjoy your golf this Saturday team.

Cheers

Ben

Strokeplay Championship, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October

The weather made it a difficult weekend for our Strokeplay Champs. Thunder, lightning and heavy rain on Saturday sent all the ladies running off the course on Saturday morning, after 9 holes. Many went straight home, while a few waited in the marquee. Under golf tournament rules, play is resumed on the same day, if the weather clears. And it did.

Four Silver division ladies and four Bronze 1 division ladies finished the first round and qualified for the second days play. There were no Bronze 2 or 3 ladies, so there will be no Bronze 2 or 3 Champions this year.

Silver Results:        Champion: Kelly Orchard 162 gross
Runner Up: Pink Leow     175 gross

Bronze 1 Results:   Champion: Dawn Rumney 191 gross
Runner Up: Jan Crawshaw 196 gross

Three of these ladies, Kelly, Dawn and Jan, will represent Omokoroa at The Champion of Champions at Lakeview, on Sunday 9th November.

We will be represented at the Bronze 2 and 3 Champion of Champions by our Matchplay Champions, Brenda Arnesen and Nikki Stephenson. Jean Dillon, will play as the Bronze 2 Runner Up; at Te Puke on Monday 10th November.

Tuesday 7th September

No haggle due to heavy rain.
