Give a little – Greenkeepers mower

Hello wonderful members. The club have started a Give a little page for the Toro mower the greenkeepers need to buy to replace the mower we have used for many many years.

It is quite an expensive specialised piece of equipment and falls outside the clubs annual budgeting capabilities. So we are turning to you the members and anyone you might know who could make a donation towards it. Click here to donate

Thanks in advance for your generosity!!

Annan Law Saturday Men’s Club Day

We continue with the third round of the Club Strokeplay Championships this week. Where possible we will try and arrange the playing groups in order of placings. For the final round next week I will allocate tee times and groupings for the top eight players in each division and send them out on Tuesday.

Suckered Ball Ruling

If your ball is embedded into the ground then you may get a clean and drop without penalty. If the ball has suckered completely into soft ground you can take a free drop where the ball was deemed to have finished up. In both scenarios you need to get approval from your playing group before making any moves. With the drying conditions this week hopefully there won’t be any more suckered balls.

If you are on a fairway on bare ground (no grass) then you can take a free drop. Once again check with your playing partners before touching your ball.

This week’s results:

Not a cloud in the sky this Tuesday as 40 ladies contested a Russian Roulette stableford. The winners with a creditable 70 points were Gay Walker and Barbara Aitken. Robyn Alabaster scored a 2 and Judy Lewer was nearest the pin on 11. Julie Howard received the Stars Trophy for trying to log into the computer with her birthdate.

Saturday ladies enjoyed a stableford haggle, with Lynda Smith topping the scoring on 38. Chrissy Anderson and Janet Barrett played the semi-final of the Jewellery Cup, with Chrissy going through to the final against Martina Keir. What a hard-fought match that’s going to be.

9 Holers v 18 Holers Event:

Rescheduled from last week and fortunately a fine day dawned with little wind. A most enjoyable morning’s golf with camaraderie, spot prizes and some excellent scores. Christine Kelly was top scorer for the 9 holers with 20 stablefords and Diane Hughes had a boomer carding 22 on the back 9. Longest putts went to Sue Bigham and Linley Jamieson-Hill.

Overall, the 9 holers scored 240 points, setting the bar high, but not high enough to take home the Ellingford Trophy as the 18 holers came in with 255. A successful inaugural event which will now become an annual quest for superiority! (See photo above).

What’s new in the shop

Possum and Merino for those colder days, now in the shop. Socks, scarves, beanies, vests and jerseys. Very high quality.
We can order in anything in the Lothlorian range so check out the books in the shop or their webpage here.

Course Toilet lights

The Lights in the loos on the course are solar powered and will turn on during the day and automatically go off at night. So don’t worry about the lights staying on.

Cart Gate by the 11th Green

This is soon to be reprogrammed and will no longer use the pinpad. If you're currently using this gate you will need to register with the office. We will be issuing fobs to users at a cost of $50. Ongoing use of this gate will incur an annual charge of $100 to go towards the maintenance and ongoing servicing of the gate.

Covid Cards Laminated

Those of you who have dropped your vaccination cards into the office, these are now ready for collection.

If you have a Covid vaccination card you would like laminated Melissa has been doing these in batches at the office. Drop your card in and when she has a few she will laminate them all and you can come and collect them. There is no charge for this service.

Public Safety and Interactions along the foreshore

It is upsetting to hear that some of our members have been engaging in a less than friendly way to members of the public using the foreshore walkway. We want the club to be known in the community in a positive way and don’t need the harming of our club’s reputation through a few members impatience and rudeness.

As members of our club we ask that you take on the responsibility to look out for the public on and near the course and interact with them in a friendly manner. Who knows, they might just be looking to join our club and first impressions are important.

There is new signage going up at the tees reminding all our golfers to be careful when teeing off that no public are in a spot where they could end up being hit by your ball. It’s worth waiting the 30 secs for them to go past than risk injuring them or worse.

Gardening Committee

We would like to set up gardens committee here at the club. This will oversee a group who work independently but assist alongside our greenskeepers to ensure the garden/fringe areas are kept looking good.

We recognise there are already wonderful volunteers who take care of some of our gardens and we would very much like you involved with this committee going forwards. We definitely want you to continue looking after those areas you already care for. If you have a keen interest to be involved in this area please let me (Deborah) know.

We also hope to hold shortly a couple of working bees. One, to clear the back of the Greenkeepers shed and the other to clear an area of overgrowth down by the 3rd and 4th holes. Watch this space for dates.

Coring

Coring is coming up the week of 30th August to 3rd Sept. Make sure you take the opportunity to play some of the other beautiful courses in our area as our club will be closed that week.

Aims Games
We have the Aims games golf players here on the 6th September. If the Monday is a normal day of play for you keep this in mind as the course will be full of school children that day.

The Week Ahead

Next Wednesday Vet’s competition is a Stableford competition and the Shootout continues.

Week just been

There was another good-sized field on Wednesday with nearly 80 players in the field enjoying somewhat warmer and drier conditions than in recent weeks. The improved conditions obviously helped peoples scoring and some great scores were recorded. Well done Lesley Hart (nett 74), Rod Murray (68) and Jim Merritt (66) winners in their respective divisions. Jim Merritt was also the big mover in the Men’s Shootout. He is now the leader having jumped ahead of a number of players.

On Monday last, a group of Men’s Vet’s played in bitterly cold and windy conditions at Whakatane. On a day when only two players, yes only two, in a field of 129 scored 36 points or better, John Keats, Ron Deadman and Ken Shirley combined to win the pennants round of the day.

Events coming up

Events that people may be interested are.

-    23 August, BOP Vets, Omokoroa (entries closed)

18H v 9H Stableford Competition

After a delayed start due to wet weather last week we were delighted to welcome the 18 Hole ladies who joined us for an inaugural 18 vs 9 hole stableford competition. The 18 hole ladies were the competition winners on the day however I think Omokoroa Golf was the overall winner with everyone joining in the spirit of the day.

Results: Diane Hughes 22 Chris Kelly 20

Longest Putt: Sue Bigham Lynley Hill

Mavis Goldstone kindly donated beautiful daffodils for us to raise funds for Cancer Society. Thank you Mavis.

9H Men

Results for this week

The weather improved and the sun shone. That didn’t help the scores much with playing conditions still a bit soggy underfoot.

Fortunately the days are getting longer and I see the Club is already promoting a Twilight Competition for those of you who can’t get enough regular daytime golf!!

Of our Nett Trophy Competition - Round 4 we had a good field of 29 out to enjoy the morning. A larger than usual field of Ladies preceded us but didn’t hold us up at all.

The results were variable with a relative handful of good scores being recorded. Good on you those who scored well.

The Haggle prize money went to:

Division 1:

Kevin Bowick 35

Ted Parker 36

Allan Winter 36

Allan Hoskins 37

Division 2:

Alan Poore 33

Steve Crossfield 35

Murray Wills 35

Arnold Davis 36

Raffle prizes were won by:

Frank Brown

Arnold Davis

Ted Parker

On the subject of Hire Carts not being available:

Several of you didn’t play because all of the Hire Carts were fully booked.

As it transpired two of the Ladies group who had booked carts didn’t show up! Two carts went back into the shed, that’s a lose-lose!

Several players who had carts (either of their own or hired) had a seat to spare.

I suggest that members who have difficulty in hiring a cart from the club contact me first so I can do a shout-out to see if anyone with a cart has a spare seat available.

It’s not fair to let a good game of golf go begging for want of asking the question!

Cart Golf Bag holders

Free to a good home. These have been dropped to the office and anyone is welcome to them. They have a strap that will hold the top of your bag and the welded base which you could attach to a cart or maybe even your garage wall to store your clubs off the floor.
