Omokoroa Email Newsletter 25 January 2012
We had a wonderful tournament here over the weekend with over 90 players enjoying our course in excellent condition. Heaps of great comments and congratulations to Mikki Strong who took over the running of the tournament and did a great job. Kieran Muir won the professional prize at 8 under par, and Jordan Rangihika from Kawerau came up and won the amateur prize with a total of 4 under. Some great golf from our blue tees.
GENERAL NEWS
* The board want to give something back to our community. So our club will now be offering $10 green fees to all emergency personnel - Fire, Police and Ambulance. It is our way of thanking these people for the great work they do, for which they are often not thanked. These jobs can often be very stressful and hopefully they will take the offer up and come and unwind on our course. Posters will be sent to the local agencies over the next few weeks.
* The 2012/2013 programme books are in the office now. They start from March 1st and hopefully we will soon (next month or so) have a new website live with a live calender, as our programme changes so much during the year.
* We are hosting the Eves 5 course classic again with Te Puke, Tauranga, Omanu and Mt Maunganui. Our course will be used on Tuesday the 31st, Wednesday the 1st and Thursday the 2nd with a two tee start at 12pm. On Friday the 3rd there will be a 8.30am two tee start. This year there are over 350 entrants in this popular competition.
* We had a very successful trial of a Tru-Turf roller from Omanu last week, and those lucky enough to play at the end of the week and on Saturday would have noticed the lovely roll our greens had. So we will be trialling another type of roller before we embark on some grant applications and fundraising to get this piece of equipment.
* Another hole in one on Sunday at the 4th from Don Howard, during the Omokoroa Open. The press photographer was in close attendance so a great time to get one. Thats three is just over a week, after getting the same number pretty much the whole of last year.
* December was another good month financially for the club. Despite some wet weather holding us back we still did $8,500 in green fees, a $1,000 more than last year. Our subs were also up by over $3,000 for the month compared to last year. So after 4 months we are over $40,000 better than last year, a fantastic start to our financial year.
* Adam is going to be putting couch grass on our 11th and 2nd tees, in the next month or so. We are slowly moving all our tees to couch to lower water usage and give our tees a better, stronger covering of grass.
* I will be taking a bit of time off over the next few months to deal with some family health concerns. I will still be doing my job but it will be with irregular hours. Sue, Bob and Mikki will be seen in the office more often and if they can't deal with your query I am always on email, tim@omokoroagolf.co.nz, and my mobile is 0277653460. I will be in most days for a few hours so any problems will be sorted promptly. Thanks.

Last week’s question Q: When playing after a heavy rainfall my tee shot landed just outside of a bunker, close enough that I was going to have to take my stance from inside the bunker to play my second shot. However, I was going to stand in the middle of a large puddle in the bunker. Can I take a drop even though the water was in a hazard?
Answer A: You have the right by Rule 25 to take relief while standing in casual water as long as your ball is not in a water hazard. Since your ball lay “through the green,” you should have found the nearest point of relief through the green (whether your feet were in or out of the bunker), and dropped the ball within one club length of that point, no closer to the hole and not in the hazard.
This week's questions Q: While playing a short par 3, my tee shot came to rest on the fringe of the green. I wanted to putt the ball from the fringe, but a sprinkler head was directly in my line. Was I entitled to relief from the sprinkler head?
